To County Board & Club Secretaries Affiliated to Ulster Provincial Council IABA 11 September 2006
Dear Secretary,
IABA Elections 2006
At a meeting of the Ulster Council IABA held in the I.N.F. Hall Omagh, on Tuesday 27 July it was decided to defer Nominations for the Central Council Elections 2006 until the Council were aware of the support they would receive on two matters.
1. Support from existing Central Council Officers and Members to change the decision of the Officers of IABA in refusing permission for Ulster to host the Commonwealth Championships 3-10 June 2007.
2. Support for a letter from Sadie Duffy (Ladies Commission) asking the Central Council to change the appointment of a Male Manager for the Female European Championships and appoint a Female Manager.
At the Central Council meeting held in the National Stadium on Saturday 29 July the matter of the Commonwealth Championships was deferred to enable us to try and change the dates to 1-8 July. The decision to send a Male Manager was upheld with only Ulster Council and Dublin Co. Board voting for change.
Following the Meeting I contacted the Waterfront Hall to see if it was possible to change the dates and was told that the Waterfront was fully booked out until it closed for refurbishment on 8 July 2007. I then informed Dominic O’Rourke, President, of the situation only to receive another letter saying permission was still refused.
At the meeting of 26 August in the National Stadium the matter was again put to the Central Council but we only received support from Joe Hennigan who proposed that the Commonwealths be allowed on the original dates. We were certainly annoyed but not surprised that no support came from any of the existing Members. Why was there no support from elected Ulstermen and the Antrim Co. Board delegate? Only they can answer this…
The Officers of the Ulster Council IABA feel they have no support at National level and unless we have change in the Officers & Members we will be faced with lack of support for another two years.
We would therefore ask all Ulster Co. Boards & Clubs to only support the following in the forthcoming IABA Elections.
President: - Joe Hennigan Members: - Philip Sutcliffe, Jim Murrin, Bill Stacey & Pat Ryan.
If elected, these will be new members free from any baggage and who, we expect, would want to support boxing throughout Ireland and from whom we would also expect Fair Play.
Yours in Amateur Boxing.
