DOCKERS’ duo Brian McSorley and
James McDonagh served up two of the night’s most
entertaining contests as they secured Antrim
Intermediate titles in their home club.
McSorley’s 57kg final with Gleann’s Paul Hyland got the
evening off to blistering start, with both fighters
hungry for the title.
Hyland’s energetic start was in contrast to his
opponent’s more patient approach and that paid off for
McSorley as his counter-attacking style allowed him to
pick off the scoring punches in the first two rounds.
Hyland came storming back in the third round to set up a
tense final two minutes. The Gleann boxer looked to be
steering the contest in his favour with a blistering
flurry of punches, but McSorley was able to get through
for the odd score to take him over the line.
McDonagh was made to fight for the 64kg title by Kevin
Fox of Oliver Plunkett’s, who recovered from a standing
count in the second round to push the Dockers’ man all
the way.
McDonagh edged two close opening rounds but Fox’s
excellent third round brought him right back into it.
A toe-to-toe scrap in the final round kept the result in
doubt right up to the bell, but McDonagh’s early work
was enough to edge the decision in his favour.
The Oliver Plunkett club did manage to produce a
champion, though, with Tyrone McKenna seeing off the
challenge of Gilford’s Ciaran McConville in the 54kg
final.
McKenna’s huge reach allowed him to land punch after
punch, with McConville struggling to get inside the
ranging Oliver Plunkett’s fighter and the fight was
finally stopped at the start of the third round on the
20-point rule.
Another Dockers’ boxer also secured a title, with
Christopher Meighton’s relentless punishment of
tenacious Gilford fighter Peadar McComiskey in the 60kg
decider finally stopped by the referee in the fourth
round after the Co Down man had taken two standing
counts.
Michael Bustard of Monkstown was always comfortable in
winning a cagey 69kg final against Sean Finney of Toome
while Mark Ginley of Oliver Plunkett’s took the John
Donnelly Building Trophy 13-26. |
