Light heavyweight prospect Tommy
McCarthy is two bouts away from claiming an Irish title at the
National Youth Championships just a few weeks after going all the
way in the Ulster Senior Championships.
The future stars of Irish boxing will be
on show when the Championships resume with eight quarter finals at
the National Stadium in Dublin tonight.
McCarthy, from the Oliver Plunkett club
in Belfast, will be in semi final action on Saturday evening versus
Conamara ace Ciaran O'Griofa.
The Ulster teenager, who won the 2007
Best Youth award at the IABAs Awards Night in January, advanced to
the last four after a convincing win over Galway's Anthony Ward last
weekend.
And the recently crowned provincial
champion can't wait for Saturdays meeting with O'Griofa -
who impressed against Brian O'Connor last time out - at the home of
Irish boxing.
He said: "It was a tough fight against
Ward last weekend but I'm glad to have got it under my belt. I'm
expecting another tough bout on Saturday and I'm looking forward to
it."
Ulster Senior finalist Ruairi Dalton and
Tyrone McCullagh are also through to the last four
following comprehensive quarter finals wins last weekend.
Dalton, of the St John's club in
Antrim, stopped Lurgans flyweight Andy Watson on the 20 point rule,
and Illies Golden Gloves star McCullagh chalked up a 12-2 win over
Cathal O'Connor.
Bernie McDonagh, the comeback kid, will
also be in last four action versus Martin Fraiser following his
never-say-die win over middleweight Matt Johnson in the quarter
finals.
Johnson took the first three rounds and
was leading 6-3 at the start of the fourth, but McDonagh pulled out
all the stops in the final frame to edge a 9-8 decision from a four
round thriller.
Meantime, Corks only representative at
the National Stadium, Rory O'Donoghue, of the Riverstown club on
Leeside, will meet Derry welterweight Conor Coyle in one of eight
quarter finals tonight.
O'Donoghue, a three times
Irish underage champion, progressed to the
last eight courtesy of a commanding 18-4 verdict over Lisburns Ben
McCourt six days ago.
The Championships resume this
evening with eight quarter finals in the welterweight and

continue with semi finals sessions tomorrow afternoon and evening.

The St Anne's club in May are guaranteed
one title from the 2008 National Youth Championships after
club-mates Ray Moylett and Martin McDonagh both advanced to the
60Kg decider following semi finals wins at the National Stadium in
Dublin today.
The Championships recommenced with two
semi final sessions at the South Circular Road venue this afternoon
and evening.
Dublin light flyweight Declan
Geraghty cruised through the first of this evenings last four
clashes, out-pointing
David Francis Nevin, while the all
Dublin derby between Anthony O'Brien and Mike Stevens, a fine
contest from the opening bell up, went the way of Stevens who
bounced back in style from losing the opening two rounds.
Bantamweights Bernard McDonagh and
Martin Fraiser exploded into life in the final round, McDonagh
maintaining his composure to ensure that Munster would have at
least one boxer in next weekends finals.
Meantime, the all Belfast and all
Dublin semi finals saw Tyrone McKenna and Jamie Kavanagh emerge
victorious
at the expense of Paul Hyland and
Dean Evans.
Cork welterweight Rory O'Donoghue
meantime, was four points up at the end of the second, but
Christy Boyle came storming back to take a one point lead at the
end of the fourth en route to victory, while David Barrett had
his hand raised in triumph following an end-to-end four rounder
with Thomas O'Neill.
High Performance coach Jim Moore had
no hesitation in predicting that light heavyweight Tommy
McCarthy will go on to become one of the stars of Irish boxing
in the near future.
And the Ulster senior 81Kg champ
lived up to his billing with a solid display against Ciaran
O'Griofa.McCarthy's laid back style is contrasted with an
ability to move swiftly up through the gears and he did just
that to devastating effect to stop O'Griofa in the second.
McCarthy was eighteen points up when the bout was halted.
Ross Lacey out-scored John F Connors
to win the last semi final of this evenings session and set up a
heavyweight decider with Luke Cadden next weekend.
In this afternoons session, James
O'Donnell gave it everything he had in the fourth round of a high
tempo contest with eventual victor Charlie Haggerty who skilfully
maintained his three point advantage in the face of a sustained
offensive in the final frame.
Munster's hopes of making the light
flyweight final were dashed when Garry Molly produced a controlled
performance versus the brave Stephen Farrell.
Ruairi Dalton, an Irish and Ulster 2008
senior finalist, saw off the challenge of Neil Walker in an all
Antrim/Belfast dust up after building on his lead in every round up
to the final bell.
Tyrone McCullagh is also through to the
finals, despite the best efforts of Alan Phelan who never stopped
coming forward . However, there was no denying McCullaghs
superiority on the day.
Ray Moylett is one of the favourites
in the lightweight division, but the Mayo teenager had to maintain
his concentration
against James McDonagh, who took a
standing count in the fourth.
Moylett will meet his own club-mate
Martin McDonagh in next Fridays 60Kg final - McDonagh edged out
Patrick Harkin in one of the fights of the tournament, a four
round battle of attrition which was level five times before McDonagh,
who was never behind in the bout, took the final round.
Patrick J Ward is also just one bout
away from glory, along with David Joyce, who KO'd Conrad Cummins
with a
stunning left hook short right
combination in the first round. Joyce was seven points up at the
time.
Matthew O'Sullivan, the impressive
Stephen Ward - who was obliged to take a standing count versus Alan
Delmar in the third - Luke Cadden and Darren Cruise,
after out-pointing Sean Turner, are also just eight minutes
from landing Irish titles.
*Aaron Rogan claimed a razor thin
countback victory from an exciting light flyweight all Ulster Junior
Cadet final
with Gerard McCauley. Rogan open up a
two point advantage in the second but McCauley won the final round
to leave both boxers tied at the bell. The bout was outstanding from
the recent Junior Cadet Championships.*

McCarthy
earmarked as star of the future
Seconds Out
By Eamonn O'Hara and Thomas Hawkins

Ireland’s High Performance coach Jim Moore has no hesitation
in predicting that Belfast light-heavyweight Tommy McCarthy
will go on to become one of the stars of Irish boxing in the
near future.
“This lad’s a smasher, a real star in the making,” said
Arklow coach Moore, whose son James is making quite a name
for himself in the pro ranks Stateside after a distinguished
amateur career.
A very experienced coach, Moore senior was speaking after
Oliver Plunkett lad McCarthy had advanced to this week’s
National Youth Championships deciders with a splendid
semi-final stoppage at the National Stadium on Saturday.
The Ulster senior 81kg champion lived up to his billing with
a solid display in the opening round against Ciaran O’Griofa
(Connemara).
McCarthy’s accuracy built up an 8-0 lead as the bell sounded
to end the first round.
“McCarthy’s laid-back style is complemented beautifully with
an ability to move swiftly up through the gears,’’ said IABA
press officer Bernard O’Neill.
“The Oliver Plunkett teenager did just that to devastating
effect in round two.’’
A series of crunching attacks stopped O’Griofa midway
through the round.
McCarthy’s lead had increased greatly by the time the bout
was halted.
Eighteen points separated the pair at that stage.
McCarthy now faces fellow Ulster lad Stephen Ward
(Monkstown, Antrim) in Friday’s final showdowns.
“Ward was obliged to take a third round, standing count in
his semi-final against Alan Delmar, but he was in impressive
form and it should be a great final,’’ said O’Neill.
McCarthy will be joined in the finals by his Oliver Plunkett
team-mate Tyrone McKenna who goes for gold in the
featherweight decider against Charlie Haggerty (Golden
Cobra).
Haggerty, durable Dubliner, had to withstand a torrid time
as James O’Donnell (Glenside) gave it everything in the
fourth round of a high-tempo contest.
“Haggerty skilfully maintained his three-point advantage in
the face of a sustained offensive in the final frame,’’
added O’Neill.
Ulster boxing will also look to Ruairi Dalton, the Irish and
Ulster Senior finalist, who saw off the challenge of Neil
Walker (Dockers) in an all Antrim/Belfast dust-up.
Dalton built on his lead in every round up to the final
bell.
Donegal’s Tyrone McCullagh is also through to the finals,
despite the best efforts of Alan Phelan (Ryston) who never
stopped coming forward.
But there was no denying the Illies Golden Gloves boxer’s
superiority on the day.
Welterweight Christy Boyle (Dunfanaghy) and Cavan’s Luke
Cadden complete the Ulster challenge.
Cork welter Rory O’Donoghue was four points up against Boyle
at the end of the second but the Dunfanaghy digger came
storming back to lead by one point at the end of the third
before racing away to an 11-16 victory.
The St Anne’s club in Mayo are guaranteed at least one title
after clubmates Ray Moylett and Martin McDonagh both
advanced to the 60kg decider.
Meanwhile, at the end of an excellent supporting contest,
Aaron Rogan (Oakleaf) claimed a razor-thin countback victory
from an exciting light flyweight all-Ulster national Junior
Cadet final against Gerard McCauley.
Rogan open up a two-point advantage in the second.
But the Toome lad battled back impressively to dominate the
final round and leave the boxers tied at the bell.
