"Nevin Wins Gold In
Italy"
Irish 2008 Olympian John Joe Nevin completed a
fantastic week after claiming a gold medal in Pescara, Italy this afternoon.
The 18 year old bantamweight, from the Cavan
Boxing Club, finished on top of the podium after chalking up an
impressive 17-10 win Veaceslav Gojan from
Moldovia - who received a public warning for hitting after the bell for the
end of the third round.
Both boxers qualified for the Olympic courtesy
of reaching today's 54Kg final and with the pressure off Nevin produced
another classy display to record his fourth
victory of a tournament which was acting as the second last Olympic
qualifier for European boxers.
Meanwhile, while Nevin will be bringing home
gold, Irish captain Ken Egan and John Joe Joyce both won bronze
in yesterdays semi finals.
Twenty six Olympic places were distributed in Pescara this
weekend. Twenty five places will be up for grabs at the final
Olympic qualifiers for European boxers in Pescara, Italy
between April 7th and 14th.
Irish boxers that failed to secure Olympic qualification in
Pescara this week will go into a box-off with the semi finalists from the
2008 Senior Championships at the National Stadium in Dublin
on March 14th/15th to decide the Irish squad for Athens.
However, the National Stadium box-off will be of academic
interest only to Nevin and light flyweight Paddy Barnes, from the Holy
Family club in Belfast, who qualified for the 2008 Olympics at the World
Championships in Chicago last November.
Meanwhile, according to the AIBA team rankings
for the Pescara Olympic qualifier, Ireland (before today's finals)
were in 5th spot in the league table which is
based on wins at this weeks tournament.
Forty one nations were competing in Pescara,
Italy this week.
The Irish team will arrive home via Dublin
Airport at 1.30pm tomorrow (Sunday March 2nd).
