the points and medal score tables (up to the semi finals stages)
based on the performances of forty nations at the 37th European
Senior Championships which conclude in Liverpool tonight.
The final placings will be confirmed
after this evenings finals.
Tonight's finals will be televised live
by TG4 beginning at 7pm.
Ireland's interest in the Championships
ended on Thursday after Eamon O'Kane, John Joe Joyce and Ross Hickey
bowed out at the semi final stage.

bronze medals from the continental deciders, boosting Ireland's
medal haul
to 36 since Jimmy Ingle and Paddy
Dowdall won double gold at the 1939 European Senior Championships in
Dublin.
The hat trick of podium
finishes maintains Ireland's remarkable sequence of having won
medals at every tournament entered in 2008.
This includes the Olympics Games (one
silver, two bronze), the World Youth Championships (one gold, one
silver, two bronze), European Union Senior Championships (four gold,
two silver), Women's European Union Senior Championships (one gold,

It’s bronze for boxer O’Kane
By David
Kelly
Friday, 14 November 2008
Eamonn
O'Kane's run at the European senior championships in
Liverpool came to an end last night.
O'Kane
will be delighted with his bronze medal when the
dust has settled but was nevertheless "very
disappointed" that he went down 10-2 at the hands of
classy Russian Maxim Koptyakov in their middleweight
semi-final.
O'Kane,
who has been struggling throughout with a sore left
elbow, said: "I felt I was a little bit sluggish
coming back with punches and I'm just very
disappointed I couldn't get through to the final.
"But, you
know, he caught me with six or seven really tough
body shots and my conditioning got me through it.
"I gave
it everything but the performance wasn't quite what
I wanted but if someone had offered me a bronze
medal at the start of the championships I would have
broken their arm for it."
It was
also the end of the road for light-welter John Joe
Joyce and lightweight Ross Hickey.
Joyce had
beaten Hungarian Gyula Kate in the Olympics but in
last night's semi-final he allowed the Magyar to
grab the initiative at the midway point and go on to
triumph 8-2.
Only
trailing 2-1 at the end of the second, Joyce seemed
to land at least two clean blows in the third which
failed to register on the computer scoring, while
Kate's punches did and he took a 4-2 lead into the
last two minutes.
It went
from bad to worse for Joyce as he received a public
warning for holding, handing two more points to the
Hungarian who was then able to pick off the Irishman
as he chased him down in desperation,
Irish
president Dominic O'Rourke and Joyce’s St Michael’s
Athy coach said: "I was disappointed with the
scoring because there were times when Johnny scored
but it didn't come up.
"And then
he was chasing the contest in the last round which
is always hard.
“We
thought he could repeat what he did in Beijing but
Kate was very strong and he had clearly learned from
the Games and boxed very well.
Lightweight Ross Hickey also had to settle for a
bronze medal after going down 9-3 at the hands of
Belarussian Vazgen Safaryants.

Irish trio settle for bronze
Boxing: European Amateur
Championships
By Eamonn O’Hara
14/11/2008
IRELAND’S bid for glory and gold at the 37th European Senior
Championships in Liverpool came to grief last night as Eamon
O’Kane, Ross Hickey and John Joe Joyce all suffered
heartbreak defeats in their semi-final bouts.
O’Kane, the vastly experienced Immaculata middleweight, knew
the hopes of Irish boxing rested finally on his broad
shoulders before he stepped into the ring at the Greenback
Academy to take on Russian power-puncher Maxim Koptyakov.
For, earlier in the evening, Hickey’s hopes of qualifying
for tomorrow night’s gold medal match in Europe’s 2008
Capital of Culture faded away at lightweight when beaten by
six points by Belarussian Vazgen Safaryants.
Unfortunately, the same margin would bring the challenge of
John Joe Joyce at light-welter to an end also after four
rounds against his long-time international rival Gyula Kate
of Hungary.
Safaryants won 9-3, Kate 8-2 and those defeats left all
Irish eyes on the man from the ‘Mac, who had produced two
tremendous
performances to defeat Turkey’s Adem Kiliggi by a point and
Andranik Hakoyban of Armenia by two points in the
quarter-finals.
But big-hitter Koptyakov delivered the cleaner punching and
after eight tough minutes their middleweight silver medal
box-off finished 10-2 to the Russian.
It was, nonetheless, an outstanding tournament for Ireland,
yet another terrific showing by an Irish team this year,
with O’Kane, Hickey and Joyce returning home with bronze
medals. In all major competitions IABA entered teams in this
year, medals were achieved and prior to the semi-finals
Ireland were ranked fourth in the overall standings.
A big night, however, it turned out for host nation England
as Hull bantam Luke Campbell battled to a 4-1 cat-and-mouse
victory over Germany’s Denis Makarov. Hel is eight minutes
away potentially from becoming the first English gold
medallist at this level since Frankie Taylor won a senior
European title in Belgrade in 1961. Campbell faces
Bulgaria’s Detelin Dalakliev in tomorrow’s final after
Dalakliev scored a 7-0 win over Andrew Selby of Wales.
A rest day at Liverpool, there is no shortage of fight
action on the cards for local fans tonight with finals of
the Patsy Quinn Ulster
Intermediate Championships scheduled at the Dockworkers
Club.
For Dockers ABC, the title bill offers three opportunities
to produce champions. Paddy Fitzsimmons prospects feature at
light-welter where James McDonagh takes on rangy St Joesph’s
Derry finalist Kevin McIntyre, at welter through Matthew
Neeson and super-heavy where Ben Urquart shoulders their
hopes.
Neeson, who forced the retirement of Neil Murphy (Holy
Cross) in the semis, faces Gleann power-puncher Patrick
Gallagher who caught the eye, and Gilford’s Peadar
McComiskey, quickly and often for an RSC2 semi-final win.
Urquart goes against Holy Trinity’s Stephen McMonagle.
Trinty have two title contenders, the other being Mark
O’Hara, a featherweight who displayed solid defensive skills
and impressive accuracy to see off Gleann’s Gerard Matthews
14-6.
O’Hara is matched against Braid’s rangy 17-year-old Steven
Richmond whose clean punching in the third round of his
semi-final with Glenside’s James O’Donnell was key to edging
a two-point result having earlier impressed against
Lisburn’s Martin Frazer.
At light-middle the experience of hard-hitting Michael
Bustard of Monkstown provides a stern exam for Gilford’s Ben
Davidson while County Down is stringly represented with
Rostrevor’s cruiser favourite Declan Trainer (St Bronagh’s)
opposed by Colm Caulfield of Castleblayney and two from All
Blacks ABC in with a shout. Paul Quinn takes on Errigal
bantam Colin Glendenning and Matthew Toner aims for
light-heavy success against Ring’s Paul Ferguson.
The doors at the famous Pilot Street venue open at 7.30pm

"O'Kane,
Joyce, Hickey Bow Out"
There was triple disappointment for
Ireland at the 37th European Senior Championships in Liverpool
tonight after Eamon O'Kane, John Joe Joyce and Ross Hickey lost
their semi bouts at the Greenbank Academy.
However, despite the hat trick of
reversals all three will be taking home bronze, boosting Ireland's
medal haul since the 1939 European Senior Championships in Dublin to
thirty six.
Eamon O'Kane, one of the great stalwarts
of Irish boxing, was the last Irish boxer into the ring tonight, but
the Immaculata Belfast middleweight had to accept second best
after he was beaten 10-2 by
Maxim Koptyakov of Russia.
Earlier in this evenings semi final
bouts, Ross Hickey and John Joe Joyce bowed out following defeats to
Vazgen Safaryants of Belarus and Hungarian light welterweight Gyula
Kate, who Joyce beat at the 2008 Olympics.
But there was no repeat of the St
Michael's Athy mans impressive performance in Beijing on Merseyside
this evening as Kate had his hand raised in victory on an 8-2
verdict - Joyce received a public warning for holding in the fourth
round of this bout.
Hickey was the first Irish boxer between
the ropes. However, despite a brave performance the Grangecon
lightweight lost out 9-3 to Safaryants, who earned two of his points
after Hickey received a public warning for holding in the third
frame.
The preliminary rounds (up to and
including tonight's semi finals) of the European
Senior Championships were held at the Greenbank Academy.
The finals will be held at the Echo
Arena in Liverpool on Saturday November 15th.
All eleven finals will
be televised live by TG4 starting at 7pm.
Friday is a rest day at the
European Senior Championships. The Irish squad will
return home on Sunday morning.

O’Kane tipped for gold
European Senior Championship boxing
By Paul McConville
13/11/2008
right on target: Eamonn O’Kane is a guaranteed a
medal after his quarter-final win last night
EAMONN O’Kane guaranteed himself at
least bronze medal at the European Senior Boxing
Championships in Liverpool last night, but his Immaculata
coach Gerry ‘Nugget’ Nugent believes there’s more to come
from the Derry man.
O’Kane edged out Armenia’s Andranik Hakobyan 6-4 in their
75kg quarter-final bout and now faces Russian Maxim
Koptyakov, a 12-3 winner over Mikalai Vesialou of Belarus,
in the semi-final.
“Eamonn comes on, he starts getting better as the tournament
goes on. The Russians are always going to be hard,” said
Nugent.
“Eamonn’s a good kid, he trains hard and his defence has
come on a lot.”
O’Kane’s victory went some way toward making up for the
disappointment of another ’Mac man, Ryan Lindberg, who was
cruelling edged out his 54kg quarter-final bout in the dying
seconds the previous night “Ryan was very unlucky, the guy
scored in the last three seconds. But he’ll bounce back,”
said Nugent.
There was mixed fortunes for the two Joyces on the Ireland
team. Featherweight David Oliver lost his quarter-final bout
against Ukrainian Olympic champion Vasyl Lomachenko 10-2,
Lomachenko, who was also named Boxer of the Tournament at
the Beijing Games and was a silver medalist at last year’s
World Championships in Chicago, shut Joyce out in the first
two rounds to take a 4-0 lead.
The Athy man got a point back in the third which was tied,
the Ukrainian stretched away in the final round, taking it
5-1.
There was better news for David Oliver’s cousin, John Joe,
in the 64kg division with Irish senior champion and Olympian
John Joe came out on top of a toe-to-toe encounter with
Bulgarian Dimitar Stilianov.
There was nothing between the fighters in the first three
rounds and with the score poised at 7- 7 going into the
decisive final round, with was Joyce who found that extra
bit in the tank to secure the win.
He will not have too long to dwell on his victory though as
he will now face Hungary’s Gyula Kate in today’s semi-final.
Joyce met Kate in the Olympics in Beijing and won the bout
9-5 so the Hungarian will be out for revenge.
Ireland’s other medal hopeful in action last night, Con
Sheehan was on the wrong end of a 4-2 decision against
Romanian Petrisor Gananau in the heavyweight quarter-final.
Ross Hickey, who secured himself a bronze on Tuesday night,
will be looking to change that colour to silver at the least
when he takes on Vazgen Safaryants of Belarus in today’s
60kg semi-final.

"JJ Joyce and
O'Kane Advance"
Irish middleweight Eamon O'Kane joined
John Joe Joyce and Ross Hickey in the semi finals of the 37th
European Senior Championships after recording a deserved win over
Andranik Hakoyban in Liverpool tonight.
All three boxers are guaranteed
bronze from the Championships, maintaining Ireland's remarkable
sequence of having won medals at every international tournament -
including the Olympic Games - entered this year.
O'Kane, from the Immaculata club
in Belfast, chalked up a 6-4 victory over the Armenian 2008 Olympian
to set up tomorrows semi final with Maxim Koptyakov of Russia at the
Greenbank Academy.
O'Kane's victory arrived less
that an hour after light welterweight John Joe Joyce staged
yet another showdown with Hungarian Gyula Kate following an edge of
the seat 9-7 win over Bulgarian 2004 European lightweight champion
Dimitar Stilianov.
That verdict ensured that Joyce,
from the St Michael's Athy club, would meet Kate - who he beat at
last Augusts Olympics - in Thursdays semi final - their fifth
meeting in the last three years.
But while Joyce and O'Kane had
their hands raised in victory there was disappointment for Tipperary
heavyweight Con Sheehan who was beaten 4-2 by Romanian, Petrisor
Gananau this evening.
Earlier today, featherweight
David Oliver Joyce bowed out at the quarter final stage after he
was beaten 10-2 by Ukrainian Olympic champion Vasyl Lomachenko.
Lomachenko won silver
medallist at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago and
also claimed the boxer of the tournament award at the 29th Olympiad
in Beijing.
Ross Hickey won his quarter
final bout on Tuesday and will face Vazgen Safaryants of Belarus in
Thursdays lightweight semi final.
The preliminary rounds of the European
Senior Championships are being held at the Greenbank Academy with
the finals pencilled in for the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Saturday

winning ways with a quarter final victory over Bulgarian
light welterweight Dimitar Stilianov at the European Senior

tonight.
The Irish senior champion beat
the 2004 European lightweight champion 9-7 in a bout which was
poised on a knife edge (1-1,2-2,4-4) all the way down to the final
round where Joyce found that extra gear.
Tonight's win at the Greenbank
Academy guarantees the St Michael's Athy man at least bronze -
Ireland's second of the tournament following Ross Hickeys win
yesterday.
Joyce, nicknamed triple J,
will now meet Hungarian Gyula Kate in tomorrows 64Kg semi final in a
repeat of last Augusts Olympic clash in Beijing which Joyce won 9-5.
Middleweight Eamon O'Kane and
heavyweight Con Sheehan will be in the ring over the next hour and a
half.
Earlier today, featherweight
David Oliver Joyce, a first cousin of John Joes, exited the European
Senior Championships at the quarter final stage this afternoon after
he was beaten 10-2 by Ukrainian Olympic champion Vasyl Lomachenko at
the Greenbank Academy in Liverpool.
Lomachenko, a silver
medallist at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago, who
also claimed the boxer of the tournament award at the 29th Olympiad

Lindberg just misses out on semi after ‘agonising’ loss
European Senior Championship boxing
By Bernard O’Neill and Andy Watters
12/11/2008
GERMANY’S Denis Makarov ended Ryan Lindberg’s European
Senior Championship medal bid in the dying seconds of their
quarter-final last night.
Lindberg was hoping to follow team-mate Ross Hickey into the
semis, but his German opponent landed a last-gasp scoring
punch to shade a nail-biting contest 5-4 at Liverpool’s
Greenbank Academy.
Immaculata bantamweight Lindberg had fought back bravely to
level the bout at 4-4 in the final round.
Then, with just seconds to go, Makarov landed the winning
score to book his ticket to the last four.
Speaking from Liverpool, Dominic O’Rourke, president of the
Irish Amateur Boxing Association, described Lindberg’s
defeat as
“agonising”.
“Ryan levelled the bout in the fourth and we thought that he
would win it out,” he said.
“But the German picked up that vital point in the final
three seconds. It was an agonising defeat for Ryan, who
boxed brilliantly tonight.”
However, Ireland are guaranteed at least one medal after
Hickey made his way to the last four.
Hickey, from Grangecon ABC in Wicklow, cruised through to
the 60kg semis with a 6-1 win over Famil Suleymanov of
Azerbaijan.
The 20-year-old Irish senior lightweight champion will now
meet Vazgen Safaryants, of Belarus, tomorrow for a place in
the 60kg final.
Safaryants beat England’s Tom Stalker 6-4 in yesterday
afternoon’s corresponding quarter-final.
Hickey’s win ensures that Ireland’s boxers have claimed
medals from every international tournament they have entered
this year.
This includes the Olympic Games, the European Union Senior
Championships, the World Youth Championships, the European
Union Women’s Championships, the Junior Olympics, the
European Junior Championships, the
European Schoolboy Championships and numerous Multi-Nations
tournaments.
A quartet of Irish boxers will hope to join Hickey in
tomorrow’s semi-finals when they enter the ring today.
At 57kg (featherweight), David Oliver Joyce takes on Vasyl
Lomachenk.
Light welterweight John Joe Joyce meets Bulgaria’s Dimitar
Stilianov.
Six-time Ulster senior middleweight champion Eamon O’Kane
squares up to Andranik Hakoyban (Armenia).
Clonmel ABC super heavy Con Sheehan is also in action
tonight. He meets tough Romanian Petrisor Gananau.
The finals have been scheduled for the Echo Arena in
Liverpool on Saturday, November 15.
All 11 finals will be televised live by TG4. Friday is a

No Mersey from Irish in Euro medal chase
Seconds Out
By Eamonn O'Hara and Thomas Hawkins
11/11/2008
IRELAND’S senior boxers are enjoying unparalleled success in
a vintage 2008. Following on from outstanding achievements
at the Beijing Olympics, the Irish squad are now poised to
make another major medal-winning haul, this time at the
European Senior Championships in Liverpool.
Five of Ireland’s nine-strong panel are just one win away
from clinching bronze medals after some outstanding
performances this week at Liverpool’s Greenbank Academy.
West Belfast bantam Ryan Lindberg was first into the
last-eight box-offs, two cracking victories pitching him
into the medal reckoning.
And last night, Lindberg’s Immaculata clubmate Eamonn O’Kane
joined him in the quarters.
The Derry-born middleweight came from behind in a torrid
encounter to oust tough Turk Adem Kiliggi, winning by the
narrowest of margins, 7-6.
The two ’Mac men are joined in the medal hunt by Grangecon
lightweight Ross Hickey, feather David Oliver Joyce (St
Michael’s, Athy) and his light-welterweight cousin John Joe
Joyce, also from the Kildare stable.
Clonmel’s Con Sheehan was also aiming to make it through to
the quarter-final placings last night.
He was due to face Viktar Chvarkou (Belarus) in the last 16
of the heavyweight division.
Reigning Irish featherweight champ David Oliver Joyce
enjoyed a convincing 16-3 win over British 2008 Olympian Joe
Murray.
The Irish camp were delighted with Joyce’s win, but defeated
opponent Murray wasn’t at all impressed.
Reports yesterday stated that Manchester man Murray intends
“to move to the paid ranks in light of his one-sided
defeat.’’
The 21-year-old world bronze medallist was furious with the
16-3 score and said the judging was worse than in this
summer’s Olympic games, where he went out in the first round
after defeat to China’s Gu Yu.
“They said the scoring was bad in China, but when you come
back to your home country, it’s even worse,” Murray blasted.
“What’s the point putting in all the hard graft when you
don’t get a fair fight?
“I want to stay amateur, but I’ve been driven away. If I
don’t go professional, now I’m going to have to quit. All I
ask is to get in the ring and get a fair decision but it
seems too much.”
Murray will be hoping to emulate fast-rising brother John,
23, the reigning British lightweight champion with a perfect
25-0 (13 KOs) record.
But the Ireland camp will not take any of the Murray rant on
board, as they have more pressing concerns ahead.
Joyce will now face Ukrainian Olympic champion and 2007
World Championships silver medallist Vasyl Lomachenko in
tomorrow’s Greenbank programme.
His Athy cousin, John Joe, cruised into the quarters after a
comfortable 20-3 win over Scottish light welterweight John
Tain.
The Beijing Olympian clashes with Bulgarian southpaw and
2004 European senior lightweight champion Dimitar Stilyanov
tomorrow.
Stilyanov was beaten in the last 16 of the 2004 Olympic
Games by Amir Khan and was also beaten by Joyce’s St
Michael’s, Athy team-mate Roy Sheahan in the semi-finals of
the 2007 European Union Championships at the National
Stadium in Dublin.
Lindberg and Hickey progressed to the last eight after
registering wins over Samir Mammadov of Azerbaijan and
Oleksandr Kluchko (Ukraine).
Today they meet Denis Makarov (Germany) and Famil Suleymanov
(Azerbaijan).
But it isn’t all good news from the Irish camp in Liverpool.
Dubliner Darren O’Neill is out of the European reckoning
after losing out to Nikolajs Grishunins (Latvia).
Light-heavy O’Neill lost out 11-5.
Donegal’s Willie McLoughlin and Dublin’s Conor Ahern also
bowed out following last 16 reversals to Germany’s Jack
Culcay-Keth and Salomo N’Tuve of Sweden at the weekend.
The European finals are set for the Echo Arena in Liverpool
on Saturday November 15 with all 11 finals televised live by

Lindberg gets off to a flyer
Boxing: European Senior Championships
By Eamonn O’Hara
07/11/08
Ryan mighty: Immaculata’s Ryan Lindberg (blue)
got his European seniors campaign off to a fine
start yesterday with a five-point preliminary round
victory over Turkish bantam Abdullah Dursion.
Picture: Colm O’Reilly
IRELAND enjoyed the perfect start to
the European Senior Championships after Ulster pair Ryan
Lindberg and William McLaughlin fought through their
preliminary round bouts at the new Kings Dock Arena,
Liverpool.
Last night, welterweight William McLoughlin of Illies Golden
Gloves beat Spain’s Mariano Hilario Jiminez 14-5, to add to
Lindberg’s five-point preliminary round victory over Turkish
bantam Abdullah Dursion.
Immaculata’s star edged the first three rounds before
cracking off five scoring punches in-a-row early in the
fourth to earn a 9-4 win and set up a clash tomorrow with
Samir Mammadov of Azerbaijan.
McLoughlin will face Germany’s Jack Culcay-Keth in the
second round.
If Lindberg can deal with Mammadov, who defeated Ukraine’s
Ole Yegorovksandr 13-10, he will face either Israel’s Peter
Moyshenzon or Denis Makarov of Germany for a bronze medal.
His club coach Gerard Nugent said: “Ryan boxed really well,
is punching a bit more now, with less footwork to his
approach, and I’ve seen a big difference in his boxing, with
getting more punches off and blocking opponents shots
better. He was delighted. It was a great start for him.”
Featherweight hope David Oliver Joyce has drawn England’s
number one Joe Murray in the last 16 box-offs. They showdown
on Sunday for a place in the quarter-finals where
20-year-old Beijing Olympic gold medallist Vasyl Lomachenko
is expected to provide the opposition.
Lomachenko, a former World Junior champion and winner of the
Val Barker Trophy as the best boxer of the 2008 Olympics,
starts his campaign against Estonia’s Vladimir Nikiforov.
Paul King, England’s ABA chief executive, said of the
Ukrainian: “This kid is the real deal. He’s the best boxer
in the world right now and one of a handful of Olympic stars
that are here in Liverpool.”
Apart from Lindberg, tomorrow also sees Conor Ahern begin
his challenge at 51 kilos. He takes on Sweden’s Salomo
N’tuve. Turkey’s Erdai Inanli or Bato-Munko Vankeyev of
Belarus oppose the winner.
Ross Hickey, at lightweight, goes against Ukraine’s
Oleksandor Kluchko for the right to meet
Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Ismet Zeric or
Azerbaijan’s Famil Suleymanov.
Irish light-heavyweight Darren O’Neill begins his campaign
on Sunday with a box-off for a place in the quarter-finals
against Nikolajas Grishunis of Latvia or Austria’s Gzim
Tahir.
The final three of the squad into the European Seniors
spotlight will be Immaculata middleweight Eamon O’Kane,
light-welter John Joe Joyce and heavyweight Cornelius
Sheehan. All open their medal bids on Monday.
O’Kane has been drawn against Adem Kiliggi of Turkey. A win
will secure a quarter-final against either Armenia’s
Andranik Hakobyan or Darius Sek of Poland. Joyce has
Scotland’s John Thain to deal with. Victory would set-up a
last eight encounter with Italian Dario Vangeli or
Bulgaria’s Dimitar Shtilyanov.
Sheehan is matched with Viktar Chvarkou of
Bosnia-Herzegovina and should he progress, Romania’s
Petrisor Gananau or Lukas Viktora of the Czech Republic will
await him in Europe’s 2008 ‘Capital of Culture’.

Boxing: Hennigan: Youth can
inspire
Thursday November 06 2008
IRISH
team manager
Joe Hennigan believes that the performances of
Ireland's young boxers at the World Youth
Championships will be an inspiration to their senior
counterparts.
A
nine-man Irish senior squad are in
Liverpool for tonight's 37th European Senior
Championships.
Light
heavyweight
Ken Egan, who won Olympic silver, and
Andy Lee are the only boxers to win a medal at
the Europeans this century.
Lee
claimed bronze en route to qualifying for the Athens
Olympics in 2004 and Egan won bronze at the last
European Senior Championships in 2006.
Egan
won't be competing in Liverpool, but
John Joe Joyce, who was beaten in the last 16 in
Beijing by eventual Olympic champ,
Felix Diaz, will be boxing at light welter.
Up to 12
preliminary round bouts could be decided tonight,
and Hennigan said anyone who wins a medal in
Liverpool will have earned it.
"It is
going to be tough as the best in
Europe are here and I expect that
Russia will be out in force once again,"
Hennigan said.
"Our
youth squad performed magnificently in
Mexico last weekend and that will be a
confidence-booster for the lads in Liverpool."
The
preliminary rounds will be held at the
Greenbank Academy on Merseyside with the finals
pencilled in for the Echo Arena in Liverpool on
November 15. All 11 finals will be shown live on
TG4.

Ireland have named a nine man squad for
the continental deciders.
Speaking from Liverpool this
morning, Irish head coach Billy Walsh reports that preparations are
going according to plan.
He said: "We got a lot of work done in
sparring and training and the squad are relaxed and focussed ahead
of the Championships.
"We finished our sparring sessions with
England, France and Sweden last night and we will have a training
session today before travelling to Liverpool in the morning.
"The European Senior Championships are
without a doubt one of the most competitive amateur boxing
tournaments in the World.
"The Irish squad have put a lot of work
into their preparations for this tournament and are ready to meet
the challenges ahead."
Meanwhile, TG4 have announced that they
will broadcast all eleven finals live from the Echo Arena on

Ireland have won thirty
three medals (five gold) at European Senior Championships
level since 1939.
The first European Senior
Championships were held in Stockholm in 1925.
The Irish Amateur Boxing
Association hosted back-to-back European Senior Championships -
normally a biennial event - in Dublin in 1939 and 1947 because
of WW2.
