Ireland's Michaela Walsh had to settle
for a silver medal at the 1st European Women's Youth & Junior
Championships in Bulgaria this afternoon after she lost out narrowly
to Armine Nersesyan of Russia.
The Belfast teenager was edged out 2-0
over three rounds in the bantamweight final in Yambol City.
Despite the loss Walsh, and her Irish
team-mate Sarah Close, will be taking home one silver and one bronze
medal from the inaugural tournament.
Both Irish boxers were competing in the
junior category.
The podium finishes maintains the Irish
Amateur Boxing Association remarkable sequence of having won medals
at every international tournament entered this year.
Women's junior international bouts are
contested over three, one and a half minute rounds.
Fifteen nations represented by 130
boxers were competing in Yambol City.
The Irish team are due to arrive back
via Dublin Airport at 9.15pm on Sunday evening.

Ireland's Michaela Walsh advanced to the
bantamweight final at the 1st Women's European Youth & Junior
Championships following a 5-0 count-back semi final win
over Bulgarian bantamweight Kremena Mladenova in
Yambol City, Bulgaria tonight.
But despite a brave showing in the 60Kg
semi final, Sarah Close, of the Abbey club in Co Down, had to settle
for bronze after she edged out 3-2 by Swedish lightweight Love
Holgerfson.
Both Irish boxers are competing in the
junior category.
Fifteen year old Walsh, of the Holy
Family club in Belfast, will meet Armine Nersesyan of Russia in
Saturdays 54Kg final.
The Ulster teenager is now guaranteed at
least silver, a victory, which along with Closes' bronze medal win,
maintains the IABAs sequence of having claimed medals from every
international tournament entered this year.
Women's junior international bouts are
contested over three, one and a half minute rounds.

Close today received byes into the semi finals of the inaugural
European Women's Youth & Junior Championships in Yambol
City, Bulgaria.
Both boxers, who are competing in the
junior category, and are now guaranteed at least bronze.
Walsh, who boxes out of the Holy Family
Golden Gloves club in Belfast, will meet Bulgarian bantamweight
Kremena Mladenova in the last four tomorrow.
And Close, a member of the Abbey BC in
Co Down, will face Swedish lightweight Love Holgerfson just two
bouts from gold in Thursdays 60Kg semi final.
