All Saints coach Hamill blasts Donnelly decision

How
are we supposed to keep our boxers in this sport when
shocking decisions like this continue to happen?”
That’s the question posed by “outraged” All Saints coach
Gerry Hamill.
Former Commonwealth Games gold medal winner Hamill rang
Seconds Out in an attempt to highlight what he felt was some
baffling refereeing/judging at the National U21
Championships in Dublin at the weekend.
Hamill’s fury was directed at the verdict in the
light-welter semi-final featuring his Ballymena lad Stephen
Donnelly and Clones tough nut Larry Fryers, who edged the
bout 16-14.
“Stephen was 11-3 ahead, the lad Fryers had received two
standing counts during the second round, was given another
count in the third but Stephen didn’t get a point for it.”
blasted Hamill.
“Amateur boxing as I know it now is not the same boxing as
15 years ago and in truth these decisions are chasing us out
of this sport.
“Stephen is very upset and it’s going to be very difficult
for me to convince him to continue.
“I went through this myself, walked away from boxing at the
Stadium twice, but Gerry Storey talked me round to stick at
it.
“The scoring after he led 11-3 was ridiculous. Okay, the
Clones lad was well behind and went hell for leather but the
scores were going for him as if you were putting petrol into
your car.
“I’ve complained before about this and I know I’ll get
nowhere with this just like all the times before but how are
we supposed to keep our boxers in this sport?
“How can they tell you this system is better than any
other?”
