Golden boy Moylett’s a shining star

Boxing

RAY Moylett, the 18-year-old Westport lightweight, is the new amateur star of Irish boxing after claiming gold at the World Youth Championships in Guadalajara yesterday He edged out his Kazakhstan’s Daniyar Yeleussino 3-1.
The tournament, fomerly the World Juniors, had only previously seen four Irish finalists in Eamonn Loughran, Eamonn Magee, Harry
Cunningham, and Andy Lee.
All had to settle for silver but Moylett, who boxes for the St Anne’s club, went one better at 60 kilos on a weekend that featured two Irish
boxers trying to become world champions.
The other was Dublin’s Jamie Kavangh of Crumlin ABC who took on Cuban Frank Izla for 64kgs gold. Izla won 7-2. Ireland also took bronze medals courtesy of Belfast
light-heavyweight Tommy McCarthy (Oliver Plunkett’s) and David Joe Joyce of St Michael’s, Athy.
Joyce qualified for the semi-finals despite a damaged hand, sustained in sparring prior to the tournament. He put up a game challenge to Mexican favourite Oscar Molina, who went on to win the title, losing Friday’s semi-final 4-2.
Cuba, as expected, topped the medals chart and delivered champions at four weights, one of whom was 91 kilo talent Erislandy Savon, a relative of Cuban legend Felix Savon, who defeated Kazakh prospect Ivan Dichko.
Nanao Singh Thokchom of India took gold at 48kgs, beating Russian champion Grigoriy Nikolaychuk 15-5. Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Gonzalez surprised with a win over Cuban Yuniel Robles at 51kgs.
Host nation Mexico claimed two golds via Oscar Rafael Valdez (57kgs) against Russia’s Maxim Dadashev, not conceding a scored punch in the process, and Oscar Molina, won the 69kgs final 9-1 against Uzbekistan’s Boturjon Mahmudov.

- Shane McGuigan is just one fight away from adding an Irish U21 title to the Ulster senior crown he gained earlier this year after an eventful 30-21 win over Dunfanaghy’s Christy Boyle at the National Stadium.
McGuigan produced four rounds of relentless aggressive boxing, taking control of the fight in the first round to build a lead of 11-2. Boyle did peg back the deficit to four points at one stage of the third round, but was caught with a cluster of body and head shots to start the last session eight points adrift.
Boyle tried all he knew during a ferociously contested final round, but young McGuigan emerged an 11-point winner. He faces John Joe Joyce of the St Matthew’s club in Dublin in Friday night’s title bout.
Ulster gained a lot of success at the weekend with wins for Sonny Upton (Holy Family GG) at 60kgs over Mark Ginley of Oliver Plunkett, for McGuigan’s club-mate at Clones, Larry Fryers, who defeated Steven Donnelly at 64kgs, and Twintowns’ Stephen O’Reilly. He beat
Loughglynn’s Donal Ward.
Fryers’ success was remarkable. He survived two standing counts in round two, was behind 11-2, but levelled the bout in round three and finished a four-point winner.

Moylett gold, McCarthy bronze at World Youth boxing championships

By David Kelly
Monday, 3 November 2008

Ray Moylett made Irish boxing history at the weekend when he claimed gold at the World Youth championships in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Mayo lightweight Moylett is the first Irishman to win gold at these championships, formerly known as the World junior championships - at which Eamonn Loughran and Eamonn Magee won silver.

The 18 year old, from the St Anne's club in Westport, defeated 2006 World Cadet champion Daniyar Yeleussino of Kazakhstan 3-1 over four tough rounds.

On his way to gold, Moylett defeated Welsh 2007 European Cadet champion Fred Evans and Cuban National Youth champion Juan Garcia.

Light-welterweight Jamie Kavanagh, from the Crumlin Boxing Club, had to settle for silver when he lost 7-2 to Frank Izla of Cuba.

Tommy McCarthy saw his dream of a final place slip away when, despite being two points ahead going into the final round he came off second best to Russian Marten Magomedov who came back to clinch an 8-6 victory.

McCarthy, along with David Joe Joyce, brought home bronze which meant that Ireland finished fourth out of 68 nations in the medal table - one place above America.

Meanwhile, Shane McGuigan is just one fight away from adding an Irish U-21 title to his Ulster senior crown following a thrilling semi-final over Christy Boyle at the National Stadium on Saturday.

McGuigan, who had dad Barry ordered away from the corner, defeated Boyle 30-21 and now meets John Joe Joyce, of the St Matthews club in Dublin, in Friday’s final.

Larry Fryers of Clones took two standing counts and was 11-2 down to Stephen Donnelly of All Saints in Ballymena but, in an amazing comeback. Fryers threw caution to the wind and won their light-welter semi 16-14.

Flyweight Michael Conlan of St John Bosco lost 7-4 to Moate’s Gary Molloy, while Sonny Upton of Holy Family defeated Oliver Plunkett’s Mark Ginley 26-3 at lightweight.

Irish coach Jim Moore has hailed the performances of Ireland's young squad at the AIBA World Youth Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The medal laden team touched down to a heroes reception at Dublin Airport today.
Ray Moylett won an historic lightweight gold at the Championships, Ireland's first ever top of the podium finish at this level.
Jamie Kavanagh won silver and David Joe Joyce and Thomas McCarthy claimed bronze.
Moore, who was working the Irish teams corner in Guadalajara along with Jimmy Payne, was full of praise for the entire squad.
He said:  "We are thrilled with the performances of the Irish squad in Guadalajara. When we looked at the draw at the start of the tournament and saw the calibre of opposition we were coming up against we knew we would have to produce something special, we knew it was going to be very tough.
"But our boxers stood up to the challenge and beat some of the best in the world, their performances have exceeded all expectations.
"All of the squad have been with us for a few years now and are a great bunch of lads who take great pride in representing their country.
"They certainly did Ireland proud in Mexico and their performances augur well for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
"I could see Rays confidence growing when he beat the former European champion Fred Evans, and then he followed that up with an incredible win over the Cuban champion.
"They squad were delighted with today's reception at Dublin Airport and would like to thank everyone for turning out.
They say that receptions like today's are something they could get used to.
"If they keep dominating tournaments like they did in Mexico then they will get the opportunity for that - the praise will follow. It has been another fantastic week for Irish amateur boxing."

Ireland claimed four medals at the AIBA Youth Championships in Mexico courtesy of podium finishes from Ray Moylett (gold), Jamie Kavanagh (silver), David Joe Joyce (bronze) and Thomas McCarthy (bronze).

Eighteen year old Moylett, who boxes out of the St Anne's club in Westport, admitted after he won gold on Saturday that it would probably take a while for it all to sink in.
He said: "I still can't believe it and I think that it will take a few weeks if not months for it all to sink in that I have won a world title.
"When I beat the 2007 European Cadet champion and then the Cuban National champion, psychologically I  began to believe that I could go on and win the gold.
"It is a fantastic feeling and I would like to thank all my coaches for all their help. My dream is too qualify for the London Olympics and I believe that I can realise that dream."
The weekends medal haul ensured that Ireland finish in fourth spot in the medals tables behind hosts Mexico and power houses Russia and Cuba.

AIBA Youth World Championships - Day 7

02.11.2008

The 1st AIBA Youth World Championships, at the "Unidad Deportiva López Mateos" Gymnastic Complex in Guadalajara, Mexico, has drawn to a close with the best young pugilists from around the world being crowned the youth champions of the world.

Nanao Singh Thokchom (IND), Jonathan Gonzalez (PUR), Magomed Kurbanov (RUS), Oscar Rafael Valdez (MEX), Raymond Moylett  (IRE), Frank Izla, Rey Recio, Jose Angel Larduet and Erislandy Savon (CUB), Erik Brechlin (GER), and Oscar Molina (MEX) are the new stars of world of boxing.

In a tournament ruled by Cuban boxers, Irishman Moylett caused the biggest upset. Against popular expectation, Moylett won the 60kg class beating, one after the other, some of the biggest names of his weight division.

Indian Thokchom was also sensational in the final of the 48kgs' where he demolished Russian Youth Champion Grigoriy Nikolaychuk by 15 to 5.

Cubans Izla and Savon expectedly defetead Irishman Jamie Kavannagh and Kazakh Ivan Dichko, in the 64kg and 91kg classes, respectively.

The same final score marked the last two bouts of the world competition. Brechlin (GER) and the much-awaited at the "Mateos" Complex Molina (MEX) won by 9:1 against, respectively, Joseph Dawejko from the USA (+91kg) and Boturjon Mahmudov, from Uzbekistan (69kg).

Romania's Andreiana and Cuba's Larduet had it easy over Russians Magomed Kurbanov (WO in the 54kg class), and Marten Magomedov (RSC in the 81 kg category).

Puerto Rico's National Senior Champion Gonzalez surprised everyone by clearly beating Cuba's Yuniel Robles in the 51kgs group, while local hero Oscar Valdez left scoreless in the 57kgs class' final Maxim Dadashev (RUS) to thrill the boisterous fans at the "Unidad Deportiva López Mateos".

Moylett crowned World Youth champion

Mayo lightweight Ray Moylett wrote another illustrious chapter in the history of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association after being crowned World Youth 60Kg champion in Guadalajara, Mexico on Saturday night.

The 18-year-old, from the St Anne's club in Westport, beat 2006 World Cadet champion Daniyar Yeleussino of Kazakhstan 3-1 over four rounds to seal an historic victory for Ireland.

Jamie Kavanagh, from the Crumlin Boxing club, was also in action, but the talented young Dubliner had to be content with silver after he lost out 7-2 to Frank Izla of Cuba.

Ireland will now be taking home one gold, one silver and two bronze medals for the tournament, courtesy of semi-final finishes for Thomas McCarthy and David Joe Joyce.

The medal haul is 50% of the total that Ireland has won at this level before the 2008 Championships.

Moylett boxed clever in Guadalajara, using all his skills to carve out a narrow but deserved win at the Lopez Mateo's Gymnasium.

As reported by Irish team manager Paddy Gallagher, Moylett claimed the first round 1-0 thanks to a solid right.

He extended his lead to 2-0 with another right in the second, but the Kazah reduced to deficit to 2-1 in the third.

However, Moylett doubled his advantage with a tough right in the fourth before being crowned World champion.

In two of his four fights in Mexico, the Westport teenager beat Welsh 2007 European Cadet champion Fred Evans and Cuban National Youth champion Juan Garcia.

Fighting Irish on top of the world

Sunday November 02 2008

Once the euphoria about the Olympics had died down, there might have been a few sceptics wondering if the performance of our boxers was, like that of Carruth and McCullough in 1992, simply a glorious one-off. Not so. Because, over the past week in the Mexican city of Guadalajara, our young boxers have given one of the most remarkable displays by any Irish team in a very long time.

Let's examine the evidence. Since the very first World Junior, now renamed Youth, championships in 1979 Ireland had amassed a grand total of eight medals. Those medals were won by some very fine boxers, the likes of Andy Lee, Eamon Loughran and Eamon Magee among them. But since Lee's 2002 silver in Havana, we hadn't graced the podium.

There were hopes that this year's team would break that duck but only the most cock-eyed of optimists would have predicted what has just happened. Our young fighters have ended up with four medals, the third highest total for any country at the championships, bettered only by Cuba and Russia with six each. The Americans, the Kazakhs, the Germans, the French, the cream of world amateur boxing couldn't match our achievement.

Athy welterweight David Joe Joyce and light heavyweight Thomas McCarthy from the Oliver Plunkett club in Belfast both won bronze medals, while late last night Crumlin light-welterweight Jamie Kavanagh took on Frank Izla of Cuba and Westport lightweight Ray Moylett met Daniyar Yeliusso of Kazakhstan in an effort to become the first ever Irish world U19 champions. Again, only Cuba and Russia had more than two fighters in the finals.

There were mighty deeds along the way. Moylett had to defeat European champion Fred Evans of Wales before overcoming Cuban champ Juan Garcia 10-2 in the quarter-final. Kavanagh stopped two opponents, beat an Italian without conceding a point and in the semi-final defeated Zdenek Chladek of the Czech Republic, a national senior champion who's fought in world championships and Olympic qualifiers at senior level.

Joyce defeated a very good boxer from Kazakhstan before losing his semi-final to home fighter Oscar Malina by just two points despite fighting almost one handed because of an injured right. A couple of points were also all that separated McCarthy from Russian champ Marten Magodemov in his semi. Donegal bantamweight Tyrone McCullough might even have joined his team-mates in the medals had he not had to withdraw with an injured hand after a victory over Shokhruth Khadjabekov from Uzbekistan, one of the powerhouses of international boxing.

Hang on a second, what am I on about? We're one of the powerhouses of international boxing. All week in Guadalajara, boxers from other countries would have regarded a draw against an Irish opponent the way our lads used to feel about drawing a Cuban. This past week has been proof that nobody is doing their job better in this country than the people steering the fortunes of our young boxers. The word world-class gets thrown about with abandon sometimes but our amateur fighters truly deserve that ranking. They're doing in their sport what Padraig Harrington is doing in his. It is a small and beautiful miracle.

1st AIBA Youth World Championships set to go

24.10.2008

The AIBA Youth World Championships Guadalajara 2008 will get underway on Saturday with 359 boxers (aged 17 and 18) from 68 countries registered to compete in the inaugural AIBA Youth World Championships, running from October 25-November 1 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The AIBA Youth World Championships replaces the Junior World Championships which was organized for the first time in 1979 and was last held (the 14th edition) in Agadir, Morocco in 2006.

Cuba won the unofficial team ranking in the last Junior (Youth) World Championships with five gold medals, followed by Russia with two golds and host nation Morocco, Ukraine, Romania, and Hungary with one gold each. Ukraine's gold medal was achieved by Vasyl Lomachenko who won the featherweight category in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was awarded the Val Barker trophy as the Best Boxer of the tournament.

While this inaugural edition of the Youth World Championships won't act as a qualifiyng event for the Youth Olympic games in 2010, don't be surprised to see some of the competing boxers in three to four years time attempting to qualify for London 2012Cuba, Russia, United States, the Ukraine, and Turkey will be competing in all 11 weight categories, while host country Mexico and Kazakhstan have entered 10 boxers each. Mexico won't take part in the lightest weight category, light-fly, because of Saul Juarez's injury.

Plenty of the world's best boxing countries will be competing with Armenia (7), Azerbaijan (9), Belarus (9), Dominican Republic (6), France (6), Germany (8), Ireland (8), Italy (3), Korean Republic (9), Puerto Rico (8), Romania (8), Hungary (9), Mongolia (4), Uzbekistan (6), and Venezuela (7) all in the mix.
Three boxers to watch out for are those who competed in the Beijing Olympics - Furkan Memis Ulas (54kg) from Turkey, Oscar Valdez Fierro (57kg) from Mexico, and Luis Porozo (57kg) from Ecuador.
Three big nations will be missing however with Bulgaria, one of the top five boxing countries in the world in the early 90s, not participating due to financial problems while Greece won't be participating as Mr. George Mantaios from the Greek National Association explained: "We decided not to send any participants to Guadalajara as we recently employed a new coach, so we want him to evaluate the team first." And rising boxing nation Tajikistan won't be taking part as its National Championships will be at the same time.

AIBA Youth WCHs: Cuba and Russia ones to watch

24.10.2008

Irish coach Jim Moore predicts Cuba and Russia to be the ones to watch at the 1st AIBA Youth World Championships Guadalajara 2008 which start in Mexico on Saturday.
And the Ireland coach wants to see his talented young squad bridge a six year gap since Irish 2004 Olympian Andy Lee became the last Irish boxer to win a medal at this level when he took home silver from the World Youth Championships, then called the World Junior Championships, in Cuba in 2002.

"The Cubans and the Russians are always very strong at this level and I have no doubt that they will be out in force again in Guadalajara," says Moore who took his squad to Guadalajara on October 12 to train and spar with Russia, Uzbekistan and France. "The World Youth Championships will always give a good indication of the talent coming through in the sport and I have no doubt that some of the boxers in Mexico will be representing their countries again at the 2012 Olympic Games
in London.
"We will be looking to bridge the gap since 2002 in Mexico and I believe we have the talent to do that. Young Tyrone McKenna, Tommy McCarthy, Jamie Kavanagh and David Joyce and the rest of our squad have been improving all the time and they are all looking forward to travelling to Mexico and representing their country.
"We are under no illusions as to just how tough it will be to finish amongst the medals. But our squad have done a lot of work together over the last few months and there is a great team spirit and we are quietly confident that we can do well."
The AIBA World Youth Championships Guadalajara 2008 take place from October 25t-November 1 at the Lopez Mateo's Gymnasium in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Cuba eyes first place at 1st AIBA Youth WCHs

23.10.2008

The king of cadets Rey Eduardo Recio heads the Cuban selection that arrived in Guadalajara, Mexico on Thursday with his eye on first place at the 1st AIBA Youth World Championships Guadalajara 2008.

Recio, winner of the  75kg class at the Pan American under-17 Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina last month, is joined by fellow champions Lázaro Álvarez (54) and Frank Isla (64) who all have hopes of leading Cuba to the top of the team rankings at the eight-day tournament which starts on Saturday.

"The objective is to finish in first place on the medal tally", explained Horta, who was in charge when Cuba claimed five gold at the 2006 Junior World Championships in Morocco. "That was a very important tournament for us because we only had six athletes in attendance. These boys are very motivated and have the quality to obtain a similar result."

Horta went on to say that Russia, India, Uzbekistan and the Ukraine are likely to be Cuba's toughest competitors, although other European exponents and Asia will also be in the mix.

The Cuban lineup also includes Pan American under-17 Championships bronze medalists Playa Girón Yorley Vallejo (57), José Larduet (81) and Erislandy Savón (91), and a couple of youthful local champions Yunier Robles (51) and Omar Ibáñez (+91). Completing the squad is Edwin Jesús Marks (48), Joel Martínez (69), and Juan Alberto García (60).

McCarthy leads Irish squad on Mexican mission

Seconds Out
By Eamonn O’Hara & Thomas Hawkins
21/10/2008

Belfast light-heavyweight Thomas McCarthy
Ready for action: Belfast light-heavyweight Thomas McCarthy is among an eight-strong Irish team that will compete in the World Youth Championships in Mexico

International competition on two fronts highlights the current strength in depth of Ulster youth boxing. As a five-strong squad of young northern boxers return from medal-winning Commonwealth Games action in Pune, India another batch of brilliant young battlers are this week targeting world games successes in Mexico.

In fact, so rich is the present crop of youth champions that Irish coach Jim Moore believes that some of the stars of the 2012 Olympic Games in London will be on display at the World Youth Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico.

And Arklow man Moore, whose son James won a bronze medal at welter at the World Senior

Championships in Belfast in 2001, reckons that one of those stars will be Ulster lad and Irish light-heavyweight Thomas McCarthy, from the Oliver Plunkett club in Belfast.

Half of the eight-strong Irish squad in Mexico hail from Ulster.

The squad have been in a training camp in Guadalajara for the past week along with Russia, Uzbekistan and France.

The other Ulster boxers are flyweight Ruairi Dalton (St John’s, Belfast), Donegal bantam Tyrone McCullagh (Illies Golden Gloves) and feather Tyrone McKenna (Oliver Plunkett, Belfast).

McCarthy added to his growing reputation by winning the Ulster senior light-heavy title in April this year and he could be the man to take over Irish senior captain Ken Egan’s dominance of the 81kg category.

Egan, from the Neilstown club in Dublin, claimed silver at the 29th Olympiad in Beijing and has been unbeatable in domestic competition, winning the Irish senior title for the last eight years.
But McCarthy’s skilful, hard-punching orthodox style could be the formula of a future senior star.
Coach Moore, who has been in charge of team training in the build-up to the World challenge, describes 18-year-old McCarthy as “a unique talent’’.
“Tommy has been on the Irish Amateur Boxing Associations High Performance team for four years now and he is developing into a top-class athlete,” said Moore.
“He’s won numerous medals at European, Cadet, Junior and Youth level and is moving in the right direction all the time.
“At this point I would say that he is probably our best chance of a medal in Mexico as he is in superb condition.
“He’s a very stylish boxer but he packs a punch, that’s for sure. He has a charisma about himself and is a unique talent.”
Olympic Games bronze medallist Darren Sutherland helped McCarthy prepare for Mexico with a number of sparing sessions at an international training camp at the National Stadium in Dublin recently.
Great Britain, Romania and England also took part in the National Stadium training camp.
The Irish squad flew out to Mexico last Tuesday and the action gets under way after Saturday’s draw in Guadalajara.
“All of the squads got a lot of work done in Dublin and the training camp was ideal preparation for the World Youth Championships,’’ said Moore.
“We got a lot of sparring done at the Stadium and the test matches between ourselves England, Great Britain and Romania were very competitive which is exactly what is required ahead of a major tournament.”
The World Youth Championships run from October 25 to November 1 at the Lopez Mateo’s Gymnasium in Guadalajara with 68 nations
entered.

Irish coach Jim Moore reckons that Ireland's talented young squad will take at lot of confidence from yesterdays sparring session with Russia in Guadalajara, Mexico ahead of the opening bell for the AIBA World Youth Championships on Saturday.
And eight strong Irish squad have been in training camp in Guadalajara since October 12th and have so far sparred with the Ukraine, Germany, France and Russia.
The squad sparred with the Ukraine last Thursday, Germany Friday, and France Saturday, before finishing up what Moore described as a confidence boosting sparring session with Russia on Monday afternoon.
He said: "Everything is going well out here. The sparring went very well and we were in control for most of the spars and our boxers did well against a Ukraine team which included World and European champions at 75gk and 81Kg so we are well pleased.
"We had a good day with the Russians. They had a couple of World Champions in their ranks and Jamie Kavanagh
had a great spar with one of them.
"Tommy McCarthy was also in top form. I feel that our boxers were will no longer fear anyone after yesterdays session.
A couple of them were nervous about sparring with Russia but now their confidence is really high."
A total of 359 boxers from 68 countries will compete at the 2008 AIBA World Youth Championships, formerly called the World Junior Championships.
Andy Lee was the last Irish boxer to finish in a podium position at this level when he claimed light middleweight silver at the 2002 AIBA World Junior Championships in Cuba.
And the 2004 Irish Olympian and ex St Francis Limerick southpaw is hoping that the 2008 squad can bridge the six year gap in Mexico.
"I think the squad for this World Youth Championships have a great chance to bring home at least one medal as we have some very talented boxers out there, so fingers crossed for the Irish squad."  said Lee.
The 1st AIBA World Youth Championships replaces the AIBA Junior Championships which was held fourteen times from 1979 to 2006.
Cuba has topped the AIBA Junior World Championships team rankings nine times in which time it collected 62 gold,18 silver and 22 bronze medals.

Cuba finalises preparation for AIBA Youth WCHs

17.10.2008

Cuba will complete its build up for the 1st AIBA World Youth Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico later this month with an exchange with four other countries - Spain, Colombia, El Salvador and the Philippines in Havana.

Team leader Humberto Horta says the exchange will give Cuba the perfect preparation for what will be an excellent tournament, which runs from October 25-November 1, for boxers aged 17 and 18.

"Recently we had a very fruitful stay in Russia with 44 of their top boxers, including those that will participate in the world championships, and that allowed us to confirm our options in the various weight categories," Horta said. "We took advantage of the excellent conditions of the training centre to concentrate on sparring and conditioning."

With boxers in each of the 11 divisions, Cuba is looking to repeat its excellent performance in the last Under-19 World Championships, which were held in Agadir, Morocco in 2006 where it won five gold medals. Cuba's hottest prospects include middleweight Rey Eduardo Recio, light welterweight Frank Isla and bantamweight Lázaro Álvarez.

Russia, with two gold, and Morocco, Ukraine, Hungary and Romania, who won one gold each, were the other countries represented on the gold medal Dias in 2006.

The 1st AIBA World Youth Championships replaces the AIBA Junior World Championships which was held 14 times from 1979 to 2006. Cuba has topped the AIBA Junior World Championships team rankings nine times in which time it collected 62 gold, 18 silver and 22 bronze medals.

Boxer Dalton out to shake world

By David Kelly
Friday, 10 October 2008

Rauri Dalton is hoping for success in Mexico

There is a confidence flowing through the Irish amateur boxing fraternity that is quite unprecedented.

The torch lit in Beijing by medallists Ken Egan, Darren Sutherland and Paddy Barnes is being carried on over the next fortnight by those heading to the Commonwealth Youth Games and even more significantly those who travel off to the World junior championships in Mexico on Sunday.

The self-belief in every one of the boxers is no accident and there are four Ulstermen, Tommy McCarthy, Tyrone McKenna, Tyrone McCullagh and Ruari Dalton who have caught the fire and hoping for success in South America.

Dalton (pictured) has enjoyed a dramatic rise over the past 12 months from the fringe to Irish and Ulster senior finalist and there were many who felt he was robbed of the provincial title when losing out to four-time champion Jamie Conlan. Dalton, of St John's ABC, has also filled out and in his words "grown a couple of inches" over the summer which augers well for his bid at the World juniors.

"I have grown a bit but you know I'm still making the weight easily," says Dalton, who like all the top Irish boxers is enjoying the benefits of the High Performance unit in Dublin.

"I'm just eating the right stuff now. Don't forget last year I was a bantamweight and my coach Frankie (McCourt) told me I could be flyweight if I wanted. So out went the burgers and the chicken nuggets.

"Frankie said if I could get down to flyweight he would enter me into the Irish seniors and it went very well — it was strange being in my first Irish final before my first Ulster final. The Ulster final was hard to take, it hurt a lot. I thought I outscored him by about six points but he got the decision. I'll be back this year looking for revenge. You have to just move on because that's boxing.

"The High Performance training has been great, particularly with sparring. I've been sparring with Conor Ahern — he's very aggressive, very intense and it's been great. I feel that I've handled him quite well.

"Now I feel much stronger at the weight and going to Mexico all the lads are looking for medals. That's the confidence we have in the Irish camp now.

"We know that out training is giving us the chance to beat anyone in the world so that means that if I draw a Russian in Mexico I don't care because I know that on my day I can beat anyone. The Olympics was fantastic for Irish boxing and I think everyone was inspired by the guys out in Beijing and we want to keep the run going. The sport is flying at the moment, we don't fear anyone and we can't wait to take on the best in the world."

McCarthy leads strong Irish contingent to Youth WCHs

08.10.2008
Irish coach Jim Moore believes that some of the stars of the 2012 Olympic Games in London will be on display at the eagerly anticipated AIBA World Youth Championships which glove off in Guadalajara, Mexico on October 25.

And Moore, whose son James won a bronze medal at welterweight at the AIBA World Championships in Belfast in 2001, reckons that one of those stars will be Irish light heavyweight Thomas McCarthy, from the Oliver Plunkett club in Belfast.

McCarthy added to his growing reputation - and his trophy cabinet - after winning an Ulster senior title this year and could be the man to challenge Irish senior captain Ken Egan's dominance of the 81Kg category on the Emerald Isle.

Egan, from the Neilstown club in Dublin, claimed silver at the 29th Olympiad in Beijing and has been Irish senior champion for the last eight years in a row.

But McCarthy's skilful but hard punching orthodox style could be the formula to challenge the Irish captain, and Moore, who has been putting the Irish youth squad through their paces at the National Stadium in Dublin, has described the 18 year old as a unique talent.

"Tommy has been on the Irish Amateur Boxing Associations High Performance team for four years now and he is developing into a top class athlete," Moore said.

"He has won numerous medals at European, Cadet, Junior and Youth level and is moving in the right direction all the time. At this point I would say that he is probably our best chance of a medal in Mexico as he is in superb condition.

"He is a very stylish boxer but he packs a punch that's for sure. He has a charisma about himself and is a unique talent."

Middleweight Darren Sutherland, who won a bronze medal for Ireland at Augusts Olympics, was helping McCarthy prepare for Mexico with a number of sparing sessions at an international training camp at the National Stadium  in Dublin last week.
