OPEN SENIOR COMPETITION SEMI FINAL RESULTS
Posted: 11 Jul 2009 07:17 AM PDT
Nine times Irish
senior champion Ken Egan booked his place in next Fridays
Open Senior Competition light heavyweight final after
chalking up a 12-1 win over Denis Hogan at the National
Stadium in Dublin tonight.
Egan, a silver
medal winner at the 29th Olympiad in Beijing, forced Hogan
into two standing counts in the second - two body shots
doing the damage - and was 8-1 up going into the final
round.
The Neilstown
clubman dominated the thrid also, picking off another four
shots to seal a a solid win.
Meanwhile, AIBA
World Youth champion Ray Moylette and Eric Donovan were
involved in a top class lightweight contest, Donovan
weathering the early storm to turn an 4-3 first round
deficit into an 8-6 advantage going into the last frame.
Moylette pulled
back to within one point in the final minute only for
Donovan to add three points to his tally going into the
final 15 seconds - victory looked assured.
However, the St
Michael's Athy man then ceded two points after getting a
public warning for dropping his head - but Moylette was
unable to find the punch to take the bout to a count-back.
European bronze
medalist Ross Hickey meantime, stopped Robert Gorman in
round two and Adam Nolan booked his ticket into the 69Kg
final following his 7-0 win over Graham Hogan.
Nolan will meet
2007 EU champion Roy Sheahan in next weekends 69Kg decider
after the St Michael's Athy man stopped Thomas Blaney in
round three.
David Joyce made
it a St Michael's Athy treble on the night following a 9-3
verdict over the hard working Jimmy Sweeney. Joyce will face
Stephen O'Reilly next Friday night after the Donegal
middleweight posted an impressive 5-1 win over Luke Keeler.
European Union
and Irish heavyweight champion Con Sheehan won the final
bout of the evening after being handed a decision over Danny
Tourish.

Irish flyweight champion Declan Geraghty bowed out.
Geraghty was

reputation with a 7-5 win over Joyce, of the St Michael's
Athy club.

fight. David was coming back very strong in the final round.
I knew he was a strong finisher and I had to maintain my
concentration until the end, " said the Illies Golden Gloves
man immediately after the bout.
Meantime, John
Joe Joyce and Philip Sutcliffe will meet in a repeat of
Februarys senior final after both boxers won their semi
finals today.

senior final - twelve months after Joyce stopped Sutcliffe
on the 20 point rule in the 2008 senior semi final.
There were wins
also for former Irish senior champions Conor Ahern and
Cathal McMonagle and Darren Cruise.
The finals will
be held next Friday night.

Bulgaria. It was
her 35th victory in a row. Before
reaching the final, Taylor beat Cindy Orain of France 11-2
in the semi-final and Italy’s Cordio Giacoma 14-1 in the
quarter final. She is also the reigning World, European and
Multi-Nations champion as well as the 2008 World Female
Boxer of the Year. Her fifth ‘Sportswoman of the Month’

Award
Dublin, Thur, 9th July 2009: Katie
Taylor has been named The Irish Times/Irish Sports Council
‘Sportswoman of the Month’ for June, after retaining her
European Union Championship in Bulgaria last month.
Defending the title she won in Liverpool last year, the 22
year old from Bray beat Bulgaria’s Denzita Eliseevan 8-1 in
the final in Pazardjik, Bulgaria. It was her 35th victory in
a row. Before reaching the final, Taylor beat Cindy Orain of
France 11-2 in the semi-final and Italy’s Cordio Giacoma
14-1 in the quarter final. She is also the reigning World,
European and Multi-Nations champion as well as the 2008
World Female Boxer of the Year. Her fifth ‘Sportswoman of
the Month’ title within five years means that Taylor is now
in contention for a hat-trick, having won the overall
Sportswoman of the Year Award in 2007 and 2008.
Taylor’s victory over a local favourite was the third time
in a row that she beat an opponent from the host nation in a
major international final. It came after the Ahmet Cup in
Turkey and retaining her title at the World Championships in
China against Cheng Dong, whom she faces again this week at
the International Invitation Tournament in St. Petersburg.
Speaking of her win, Taylor said “I prefer boxing opponents
from the host nation in finals because there is always a
better atmosphere. This was a difficult match, one where I
had to maintain my concentration all along. I am now
delighted to get this recognition from The Irish Sports
Council and The Irish Times.”
Taylor is currently in training to defend another title for
the third year in a row, gold at September's European
Championships in Ukraine. In the meantime, sheawaits news
from next month's meeting of the International Olympic
Committee’s executive board in Berlin, when the introduction
of women's boxing in time for London 2012 will be
considered.
“The IOC’s decision was the number one topic of conversation
among the boxers all week in Bulgaria and we are hoping that
we will get positive news,” she said. “All we are looking
for is to be given the opportunity to do what the vast
majority of other athletes take for granted – to be able to
represent our countries at the Olympic Games.”
Taylor, who is also a senior Irish football international,
travelled to Moscow in December to collect her AIBA (Amateur
International Boxing Association) female boxer of the year
award. In January, she won the overall award of ‘Sportswoman
of the Year’ for the second time, for her impressive
performances on route to the Women’s World Championships.
She had scooped ‘Boxer of the Tournament’ at this and four
other major tournaments. In February, she beat fellow senior
international, Queen Underwood of the US at National Stadium
and in March defended her Multi-Nations title at Stupino
Stadium in Moscow.
Established in 2004, the aim of the Sports Woman of the Year
awards is to recognise the abilities and achievements of
women in Irish sports. The awards run over a twelve month
period, with the judges selecting a winner each month for
her ability to excel at sport. From the twelve monthly
winners, the overall ‘Sportswoman of the Year’ is selected
and announced.
The winner is decided by a judging panel, which is
represented by individuals from The Irish Times, RTÉ, and
the Evening Herald.

Year Awards can be found on www.irishtimes.com/events/sportswoman/.

OPEN SENIOR COMPETITION
Posted: 06 Jul 2009 06:12 PM PDT
Donegal welterweight Willie McLaughlin is
a major injury doubt for this weekends Open Senior
Competition at the National Stadium in Dublin.
The IABA are using the box-off,
which gloves off this Friday night, as part of their
selection process for Septembers AIBA World Senior
Championships in Milan.

But Irish senior champion McLaughlin,
from the Illies GG club in Donegal, may have to sit out
the deciders after picking up a rib injury at the
European Union Championships in Denmark last month.
The Ulster man, who claimed silver in
Denmark, looked to be on the road to recovery from the
knock but exacerbated the injury in sparring last week.
Dependant on entries, the Open Seniors
will be run over the next two weekends with boxing
scheduled for this Friday and Saturday.
There will be no seeding at the
tournament, which will mean that Olympic silver medalist
Ken Egan could be drawn against anyone of six opponents
from the opening bell.
Hughie Joyce, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Darren
Cruise, Mark Carlyle, Tom Roohan, and Denis Hogan will
be gunning for the nine times Irish senior champion.
However, the light welterweight
division may provide most of the fireworks as reigning
senior champion Phil Sutcliffe is expected to come under
strong pressure from 2008 Olympian John Joe Joyce for
the 64Kg vest.
Sutcliffe, from the Crumlin club in
Dublin, caused the sensation of the Irish Senior
Championships last February when he stopped Joyce in the
first round of their final.
Sutcliffe's fans certainly enjoyed that
shock as they were dancing around the Stadium in
celebration. However, Joyce, stopped Sutcliffe on the 20
point rule in the 2008 semi final.
The middleweight section also contains
the potential for a repeat of a 2009 Irish senior final
in the shape of current champion Darren O'Neill and
Stephen O'Reilly.
And lightweight champion Eric Donovan may
have to see off the challenge of AIBA World Youth
champion Ray Moylette or 2008 European Championships
bronze medalist Ross Hickey to stake his claim for a
place on the Milan team.
Reigning senior champions taking part:
51Kg: Declan Geraghty. 54Kg: John Joe Nevin. 60Kg Eric
Donovan. 64Kg: Philip Sutcliffe. 75Kg: Darren O'Neill.
81Kg: Ken Egan.91Kg: Con Sheehan.
Meanwhile, a record breaking 113 nations
have entered the 2009 AIBA World Senior Championships,
which will be held from September 1 to September 12 in
Milan.
